Hello. Last I wrote, I was preparing for the Artist in Residence program at my childrens' school. What that means is that I accepted the challenge of creating a school-wide art project and working with 650+ kids through the March 9-12th week.
Using "connection" as my springboard, I developed a project entitled: Wilshire Park Connections:
Friends, Family, Learning, Community and World. We created five (no-sew) quilts, each depicting a connection : K= Painted elements and signs; 1st grade: Classmates and Friends quilt; 2nd grade: Family quilt; 3rd grade: Teachers/Learning quilt; 4th grade: Community quilt and 5th grade: World quilt
Children worked in 2's , creating one square for their grade's quilt. I brought in a variety of supplies including paint, fabric scraps, stamps, buttons, gems, and popsicle sticks. Their challenge was to depict the "gifts" of connection as related to their theme.
Prior to the actual Artist in Residence week, I asked for the teachers' help in pairing up the students and having the kids do a "rough draft" of their square. I've included below some pictures from the week. I'm hoping to see them hung in school next week! Whew, now I need to rest.

What do friends do? Help out, of course!
